The Black Welsh Mountain Sheep Breeders’ Association’s official sale at Ruthin Livestock Market produced a solid clearance and a number of notable four-figure prices.
Trade peaked at 2,100gns for a shearling ram, “Pwll Pridd Hari”, from Matthew Evans, purchased by Ashton & Moyle, Llanbrynmair. The leading female price was 1,100gns for a gimmer shearling from D & R Rowlands, selling to Ifor & Jane Jones, Tai’n y Waen flock. The ram lamb section also reached 1,100gns, when an entry from Matthew Evans sold to D Roberts.
Shearling Rams
The sale’s headline price came in the shearling section, where Matthew Evans sold the top-priced entry “Pwll Pridd Hari” at 2,100gns to Ashton & Moyle. Malcolm McCaull achieved 575gns with a shearling purchased by D A P Jones and also sold another at 380gns to Mr SK Westcott & Sons. Glenda Hughes sold at 500gns to Malcolm McCaull, while two-sheep pens from Glenda Hughes and Gareth Davies realised 350gns, 250gns and 210gns per head.
Shearling Ewes
Demand was strongest in clearance terms for the shearling ewes, with 16 of the 17 entries changing hands. The section leader at 1,100gns was the pre-sale Female Champion, consigned by Dyfed & Rowena Rowlands and purchased by Ifor & Jane Jones. Gwawr & Elgan Williams followed with sales at 610gns to P Moyle and 520gns to J S Roberts. I H Jones realised 540gns to Jonathan Theobald & Meriel Eva and 340gns to RG & AM Ashton, while Malcom McCaull sold at 480gns to Ifor & Jane Jones. The sold entries averaged 385.6gns.
Ewe Lambs
The ewe lamb trade saw 22 of the 26 sheep offered find buyers, averaging 175.5gns per head. Joint top prices of 320gns were achieved by Cliff & Georgina Williams, whose pair sold to RG & AM Ashton, and Katy Davies & Dafydd Jones, whose single ewe lamb, and pre-sale Reserve Female Champion sold to Owain Baum Jones. Ifor & Jane Jones sold at 250gns to N&Z Robson. Pairs from William Workman and Gareth Davies reached 200gns and 180gns per head respectively, while further single entries from Cliff & Georgina Williams and Phillip Moyle each made 200gns.
Rams and ram lambs
All four aged rams sold, with EL & ML Evans and Glenda Hughes each reaching 300gns. Their entries were purchased by Cerys Martin Jones and N&Z Robson respectively. The section averaged 232.5gns.
Ram lambs met a livelier top end, led at 1,100gns by Matthew Evans, with his Reserve Male Champion ram lamb “Pwll Pridd I’m the man” selling to D Roberts. Joe Mault realised 800gns with “Ty Isaf I am Charlie” selling to Matthew Evans, followed by Katy Davies & Dafydd Jones of the Twilight flock selling “Twilight Ironman” at 680gns to I & E Lloyd and “Twilight Iconic” at 420gns to Jac Jones. Seven of the nine ram lambs sold, averaging 512.9gns.

The 2026 Ruthin sale combined a strong female clearance with standout demand for select breeding males. The 2,100gns sale leader and two further four-figure transactions underlined buyer willingness to compete for the day’s most favoured Black Welsh Mountain genetics.
