Chris Hughes Award 2025

Chris Hughes Award 2025

The BWMBSA's Chris Hughes Award is awarded annually to a young person under the age of 16 who has made an exceptional contribution to Black Welsh Mountain sheep and the BWMSBA itself. Members are invited to submit nominations and the winner is picked from those shortlisted.

This year's winner is Elgan Williams and he was nominated by Ms Katy Davies. The trophy was presented to him at the Royal Welsh Show by BWMSBA President, Mrs Glenda Hughes.

The letter of nomination is reproduced below.

"I would like to nominate this young lad for his continued help and enthusiasm for the breed not only in the shows but at home on the farm. He’s always willing to help his family, other exhibitors and even those not within the breed.
He’s the first person to run back to the pens to grab something that’s been forgotten or to open the hurdle for when a sheep is coming back out of the ring.
In the shows he takes great pride in showing his sheep and has done so successfully over the years, even on soaking wet days he carries on with a smile on his face.
At home on the farm he has taken to carrying out the tasks of looking after their animals throughout winter before and after school each and everyday. He’s dedicated time into halter training and will talk for hours about the breed and what he’s been doing to help prepare them for the shows & sales; which to me shows the making of a true stock person.
He is both pleasant and extremely well mannered, even when he’s being a little bit cheeky.
All the above are attributes I think Chris Hughes himself carried and would’ve loved to have seen in the future generation of the breed.
The young lad I would like to nominate for the Chris Hughes Trophy is Elgan Williams."
