Annual BWMSBA Sale- 24th August 2018 Report
The annual sale of pedigree Black Welsh Mountain Sheep took place at Monmouthshire Auction Centre on the 24th August. Trade was rather up and down, but the best quality stock sold fairly well, although the high prices of last year were lacking.
The top price of the day was for a 3 shear ram from the Gaer flock of D & R Rowlands, Gaerwen. Their stock ram, Bryn yr Eglwys Tywsog, sired by Bryn yr Eglwys Rafiki and bred by Bethan Davies was sold for 510gns to C Davies, Carmarthen. Topping the shearling rams, was a home bred animal from Glenda Hughes’ Ffridd flock, based in the heart of Snowdonia. Fridd Ysgawen, sired by the home bred ram Ffridd Rolex, he was sold for 500gns to P Samuels, Llandrindod Wells. The Male Champion from the morning’s show, judged by Edd Williams, Talybont on Usk, was a ram lamb from the Eryri flock of Gwawr Hughes, Pwllheli. Eryri Alexander the Great, sired by Ffridd Winner, was sold to the Llanover Estate, Abergavenny for 500gns. The same buyer also paid 400gns for a ram lamb from the Ffridd flock.
Gwawr Hughes sold another male lamb for 340 gns to join Ffion Evans Skirrid flock, based near Abergavenny.
The female classes were judged by Kevin Bowman. He gave the Championship to a smart pair of shearling ewes from Edd Williams Wenallt Flock, ably exhibited by his parents (as Mr Williams was judging the male classes at the time). This pair of ewes, both sired by Wenallt Powerhouse, sold for 310gns each to D Meredith, Merthyr Tydfil. The top prices yearlings, sired by Ffridd Winner were bred and sold by Gwawr Hughes, Eryri flock, also to D Meredith for 350gns. One other pair topped the 300gns mark. This pair from M & D Evans Cefn flock and sired by Cefn Tyson, sold for 340gns to W Price, Llandovery. Other leading shearling ewe prices came from D & R Rowlands, 280gns, W Workman, Sennybridge 250gns, MJ McCaull, Hereford 230gns and Gillian Davies, Pembs,165gns.
Reserve female champions, a pair of ewe lambs from the Cefn flock and sired by Gaer Watchyn, sold for 170gns to join the Bryn yr Eglwys flock of Bethan Davies. Topping the ewe lambs was a pair of Wenallt ewe lambs from Edd Williams, sired by Wenallt Simply the Best and sold for 200gns to D Meredith. A second pair of lambs from the same Mr Williams were sold for 190gns to V Vater, Abergavenny,
Top priced of the breeding ewes was the first prized pair from M & D Evans Cefn flock, which made 160gns.
