The winners of this year's Gaer Flock of the Year Award was recently unveiled at the Annual Show and Sale at Raglan. The award, which is kindly given by Dyfed & Rowena Rowlands (Gaer Flock) is presented to the flock gaining the highest number of points at appointed shows throughout the summer. This year's shows included the Royal Welsh Spring Festival, the Royal Welsh Show, the Three Counties, Anglesey, Aberystwyth, Llanfynydd and Cwmdu.

Beating off stiff competition in shows throughout the summer, the Cefn Flock (00631) are this year's 2017 Gaer Flock of the Year winners. Established in 1987, the Cefn flock is run by Matthew & Donna Evans and family, based in Llanvihangel Crucorney, Abergavenny.

Having previously spent a decade as shepherds at Llanover Estate, Abergavenny, the Black Welsh Mountain breed has always been a passion of theirs. This eventually propelled the Cefn flock on to the show circuit, leading to a very successful show season with Donna's homebred favorite, Cefn Tyson in 2016. This success carried on to 2017 with multiple show championships with daughters of Tyson, including Breed Champion at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival in May.

The Cefn Flock currently runs a hundred ewes, as well as thirty ewe lambs. The ewes will be crossed this year with rams from the Garth, Upper House and Gaer flocks. They are also keeping on ten eligible ram lambs for next year.

Breeding and showing black sheep is a passion also shared young siblings Ffion and Llewellyn, with Ffion winning the Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy for stockmanship in 2016. Ffion has recently established her own flock which will be recognised as the 'Skirrid' flock with foundation ewes from Garth and Cefn flocks and a ram lamb purchased from the Upper House Flock.

In second place this year are close friends of the Cefn Flock, Sian & Darren Hayward of the Garnview Flock (01207), based in St.Andrews Major, Vale of Glamorgan. Both families have thoroughly enjoyed the company and friendly competition throughout the summer!

Having enjoyed success at the Royal Welsh Show, coming in third place was Bethan Davies, Bryn-yr-Eglwys Flock (01228), Llanfynydd. Bethan Davies also triumphed in the 'Ram of the Year' competition, with her two year old stock ram Ffridd Taliesin (bred by Glenda Hughes) taking the title for a second year running.

Congratulations to all!
